Extractions Q & A
What are tooth extractions?
Tooth extraction is the professional removal of damaged or decayed teeth that can’t be repaired or restored. Dr. Sweeny may also recommend tooth extraction to correct overcrowding issues. When possible, Dr. Sweeny and her associates perform simple extractions where your tooth is loosened and pulled out. However, in some situations, surgical removal may be necessary.
Why would I need to have a tooth or teeth removed?
The most common extraction procedure is wisdom teeth removal. Dr. Sweeny and her associates often remove wisdom teeth when there isn’t enough room in your jaw to accommodate them, or if they become impacted in your jaw. Both of these situations can lead to problems with your other teeth.
The other reason Dr. Sweeny extracts teeth is to remove severely decayed and damaged teeth that can’t be repaired or restored. Severely damaged teeth can put your overall dental health at risk if they’re not repaired or removed.
What happens during an extraction?
Dr. Sweeny begins extractions by thoroughly numbing your tooth and jaw. If she’s performing a simple extraction, she uses a special tool to loosen your tooth and pull it out.
If your tooth is broken or impacted, she may need to perform a surgical extraction. During a surgical extraction, she cuts into your gums and jaw to access the tooth that needs to be removed. If she needs to cut into your gums, she closes the incision site with a stitch. After your tooth is removed, she packs the socket with gauze to stop the bleeding.
How should I take care of my teeth after an extraction?
Dr. Sweeny provides customized advice on how to take care of your teeth after extraction. In general, you will leave the gauze in place for at least a half-hour, and potentially up to a day.
She may prescribe steroids to control any swelling, and painkillers if you needed surgical extraction. In most cases, over-the-counter pain medication can reduce any discomfort. You can also use ice packs to control any swelling.
You can rinse your mouth with warm salt water 24 hours after your extraction. While you can brush and floss normally, be gentle around the extraction site. You may want to have only soft and cool foods for a few days after your extraction.
